Overview

There are brains to go with the brawn at Loughborough, our Sports University of the Year. Famed for its sporting prowess, the university is also one of the country's academic powerhouses, exemplified by the recent success of alumnus Charlie Dobson, the Team GB athlete who took silver in the 400m at the European Athletics Championships in Rome in June. He graduated with a first class degree in aeronautical engineering in 2023. Loughborough-connected Olympians went on to achieve 16 medals in Paris this summer (four gold, four silver and eight bronze) which would have ranked the university 16th in the global medal table, ahead of countries like Sweden, Kenya and Ireland. Loughborough has the best university sports facilities this side of the Atlantic. They're so good that several sports - athletics, swimming, triathlon, cricket, weightlifting and netball - have their national headquarters onsite. Its students have won the inter-university British Universities and Colleges Sport (Bucs) title for 43 consecutive years. But the university also sits in or just outside the top 10 in all the major domestic rankings for academia, too. It tops the QS world ranking for sports-related subjects, and its design school is one of the best in the UK. For many years, Loughborough has aced the National Student Survey, wbc247주소 the results confirming that its students love life on its 523-acre campus. When they leave, they are hugely in demand, earning some of the highest graduate salaries anywhere.

Paying the bills

More than one in seven students benefits from university-funded financial support. Much of it is means-tested or targeted at under-represented groups, although sports scholarships worth up to £5,000 per year are awarded purely on merit. All entrants who have received free school meals at some point in their childhood are considered for Opportunity scholarships. Those from homes with an annual income of less than £30,000 are most likely to get the awards, which are worth £3,000 per year of study, as they are given out according to financial need. Students from homes with less than £25,000 of income who fail to get an Opportunity scholarship are automatically given a Loughborough bursary, worth £1,200 per year of study and £500 during a placement year. All other UK students, except those from Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, who come from homes with up to £25,000 annual income also qualify for the award. Women in Science bursaries are worth £1,000 per year for female students taking computer science, chemistry, physics, maths or natural sciences. Priority is given to under-represented groups, including entrants from low-participation postcodes, ethnic minority students and those with disabilities or caring responsibilities. There are more than 6,000 places available in student accommodation. The cheapest self-catered rooms cost from £4,865 for a 41-week tenancy, while catered rooms cost from £6,669 to £9,921.

What's new?

For a university used to being on top of the podium, the awarding of triple gold when the latest Teaching Excellence Framework results were published will not have been an unusual experience. The assessment covered Loughborough's overall rating, with further golds for student outcomes and the student experience. An investment of more than £11m in three new digital laboratories (Digilabs) on the main campus will equip students following STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) courses with the latest digital analysis skills and increased awareness of artificial intelligence. Each of the labs will feature extended reality learning, 3D data and motion capture, robotics and simulation, and modelling and artificial intelligence. Other campus projects include the relocating of some graphics and design disciplines into newly renovated spaces in Martin Hall, while the English department will be united with the rest of the school of social sciences and humanities. In the sporting arena, the university's Powerbase gym is now one of the largest elite strength and conditioning facilities in the world, following the opening of an extension in March 2023.

Admissions, teaching and student support

jpg-1411.jpgThe eligibility criteria for a contextual offer of up to two A-level grades below the standard ask are particularly broad, and around one in 11 entrants to the university held such an offer last year. Living in a postcode among the 20% with either the highest levels of deprivation or the lowest uptake of higher education; receiving free school meals; attending a state school among the 20% with the lowest A-level attainment; or participating in national or Loughborough outreach programmes are among the criteria that qualify an applicant for a contextual offer. The university considers additional contextual information when applicants narrowly miss their grades. Loughborough works hard to ensure all students, particularly those from under-represented backgrounds, go on to achieve success at university and afterwards. Progression rates at Loughborough are among the highest in the UK. Its Student Success Academy focuses on skills development at key points in the student journey, from transition to university life, through to moving into and out of work placements (a feature available with all Loughborough degrees), and on to stepping up to final year and graduation. Future Talent programmes offer work opportunities to black and south Asian students (and will expand further), while a web app, Personal Best, provides a framework for personal, academic and careers development. Long and short-term mental health and wellbeing support is offered through one-to-one sessions, group therapy and peer-led programmes.
